Frequently
Asked Questions
Why are you doing this project?
We are trying to make a positive difference while living the
good life.
What is the farm like?
The farm is in its very infancy at the moment. We've built a community kitchen with a bed-loft, two platform bedroom, a yurt bedroom, a dorm for four, a water tank, and composting toilet, but other than that, everything is still evolving. Life is very rustic and wonderful.
How do I get to the farm?
Please see our Directions page.
What is the climate like?
Daily temperatures average between lows of 13 and highs of 26C. It can rain alot during the winter months, and the nights are generally chilly.
What do I need to bring?
Though you only need your enthusiasm, we recommend bringing clothing for all weather except snow, headlamps to pass the night, good footwear (rubber boots in the rainy season) and sleeping bag. We will help all who are missing anything, with lots of 'farm clothes' for work and relaxing. Also, feel free to bring books, information, seeds, etc. that you think could help the cause.
Will it cost me anything?
See FAQ below re: food costs.
What do we eat?
We enjoy food a great deal, and all but heavy meat eaters can be accomodated. Since we don't have many gardens developed yet, we have to shop to get food. Basically, this works with a little pouch that's in the kitchen. We all donate money into the pouch (calculations put food costs at $20 weekly per person), and when anybody goes down (preferably with a donkey to bring lots back up), they take the pouch with them.
What are the sleeping arrangements?
People have a choice (depending on where current occupants are liviing) of a platform bedroom, a yurt bedroom, a spot in the dorm (sleeps four), or possibly above the kitchen or in a low bedroom. There is plenty of space to sleep, and no need to bring your own tent.
What are the work duties?
We're all expected to participate on the farm, but the hours of work are flexible. The type of work you could do on the farm can be extremely variable. This includes, trail building, composting and mulching, animal and tree care, building structures and furniture with local materials, irrigation, gardening, domestic work, fencing, and so on. Usually, we talk about what we did that day, and what we plan on doing the next day, making decisions through respectful concensus. There is no real 'host' here. Yves is a permanent resident, and therefore acts as a facilitator, giving advice and allocating resources to help you. Trini also lives and works on the farm most of the time.
Do I need to speak Spanish?
No, but we can help you learn some! We usually speak English or Spanish.
Do I need to commit to a long stay?
If you can commit to at least 2 weeks on the farm, and give 10 days advanced notice (contact us), somebody can meet you in Vilcabamba, and donkey service will be provided for your luggage from the trailhead. Drop-ins and short term visits are OK, but they're on their own, and we ask if they could bring some food to help until the next person goes down to get more.
I have more questions! How can I reach you?
Please contact us.
